ABC has ordered ten episodes of drama Astronaut Wives Club to air in summer 2014. The network bypassed the pilot process to order the show straight to series. The show is about the wives of astronauts during the 1960s "space age" era.  It is executive produced by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, producers of Gossip Girl, The Carrie Diaries and numerous other CW shows.

Interesting that it’s for this summer. I figured it would either be a midseason show (the assets) or be held until summer 2015 (mistresses). But the show doesn’t sound that good. I’ll judge once I see a promo.

  • It depends on what fails

lololol Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, if this wasn’t for summer I would say that ABC is really desperate to accept everything coming from those clowns.

  • CBSviewer

Extant and The Astronaut Wives Club… It will be a “spatial summer” ;)

Mistresses is back for this summer though?

  • Ultima

That’s now five scriped shows for ABC this summer (in addition to sitcom repeats, Castle repeats and possibly Agents of SHIELD repeats).

  • Tony JJ

Yes it is. My bad. What I meant was that it was kept for the following summer after it’s development season. Like after the fall season it was developed for. (If that makes any sense at all. If not. Never mind. Haha but yes mistresses is returning this summer)

It doesn’t seem to me that the “straight to series” thing has worked out all that well for the nets lately…

Though I’ll grant that it makes more sense for summer when you don’t have the regular development season

  • cklass

They recently moved from WBTV to ABC Studios, so it’s not surprising that one of their new shows has ended up on ABC.

  • Polyester Poontang

Oh, yes, sorry. I misunderstood you. It does sound like a good match for the mind-stupidingly Mistresses though, so I guess that’s what it’ll be paired with.

Is setting it for summer a sign of ABC realizing that more of the same won’t save their schedule?

There is also Grand Central, from Stephen King, which is rumored to be in serious contention for Summer 2014. In addition, there is also Rising Star, the reality show, although I don’t know for how many weeks or how many hours a week it will go on. I think they will only schedule 3 hours of comedy repeats though (especially because the comedy renewals will likely be an uneven number)

ABC is really beefing up their Summer lineup with multiple originals. Mistresses, Astronaut Wives Club, The Bachelorette, Rising Star, [possibly] Grand Central, & repeats, etc.

I can see ABC building up Mondays with Wives at 9:00 and Mistresses at 10:00. With Rising Star on Tuesdays, and Grand Central [shall it proceed] following Star on Tuesdays at 10:00.

  • Tony JJ

What about Bachelorette? That’s usually on Mondays 8-10

  • omabin

Yes, I doubt they move The Bachelorette. Could see something like this:

    Mondays: The Bachelorette+Mistresses
Tuesdays: Extreme Weight Loss+Secrets and Lies+Castle Repeats
Wednesdays: Comedy Repeats + Grand Central
    Thursdays: Wipeout+Motive+Rookie Blue
Friday: Secret Millionaire + Shark Tank Repeats+20/20
    Sunday: Rising Star+Astronaut Wives Club

No idea where to air Whoodunit? or Shield Repeats though.

I think they’re just experimenting until something works.

I have never read the book; looks like I will have something to watch this summer besides Under the Dome.

  • Bryce Novarro

    Was Whodunit renewed??

  • Ultima

I agree on the comedy front. They’ll obviously have the two-hour block on Wednesday, but the Friday block may not even run the full summer and Tuesday definitely isn’t happening.

  • Peter J4

This sounds dated, and Schwartz is possibly the most overrated producer out there.

I wish them luck though. I always want to see more summer programming.

    Smells like Pan Am
