TV Ratings Wednesday: 'Criminal Minds' & 'CSI' Rise, 'American Idol' & 'Modern Family' Up, 'The Tomorrow People' & 'Nashville' Fall

FOX was number one in adults 18-49 and with total viewers.

On FOX American Idol earned a 3.9 up 3 percent from last Wednesday's 3.8 adults 18-49 rating.

On CBS, the 200th episode of Criminal Minds garnered a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating up 27 percent from a 2.2 for its most recent original on January 22.  CSI scored a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating, up 25 percent from a 1.6 on January 22.

On NBC, How to Raise an Olympian garnered a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating, down 15 percent from Revolution’s 1.3 in the time period last week and down 22 percent from a 1.4 for Tuesday's Olympic special. Law & Order: SVU scored a 1.8 down 10 percent from last week's 2.0 adults 18-49 rating.  Chicago P.D. matched last week's 1.7 adults 18-49 rating.

On ABC, The Middle earned a 2.2 down 4 percent from a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating for its last original on January 22.  Suburgatory garnered a 1.7 up 13 percent from last week's series low 1.5 adults 18-49 rating.  Modern Family notched a 3.5  adults 18-49 rating up 3 percent from a 3.4 on January 22. Super Fun Night scored a 1.6 up 23 percent from last week's series low 1.3 adults 18-49 rating. Nashville tied its series low with a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating down 13 percent from last week's 1.5 adults 18-49 rating.

On The CW, Arrowearned a 1.0 down 9 percent from last week's 1.1 adults 18-49 rating. The Tomorrow People tied its series low a 0.5 down 29 percent from last week's 0.7 adults 18-49 rating.

In Late-Night Metered Markets Wednesday Night (note that the Philadelphia and Baltimore markets are currently excluded from these averages):
  • Last night’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” delivered the show’s highest overnight rating for any night of the week in nearly four years, since the first week of Jay’s return in March 2010.  For Jimmy Fallon, it was his top Wednesday  in metered-market household ratings since May 2009.
  • Leno scored a 4.3 rating, 11 share in metered-market households, “Tonight’s” strongest local-market rating for any night of the week since Tuesday, March 2, 2010 (4.6/12).  It was the highest Wednesday “Tonight” since June 3, 2009 (4.3/11), during Conan O’Brien’s first week hosting the show.
  • Fallon delivered a 2.1/7 in households, his highest rating for a Wednesday since May 27, 2009 (2.2/8), during the final week before Conan O’Brien took over “Tonight” hosting duties from Leno.
  • Guests on “Tonight” Wednesday night included Sandra Bullock, Blake Shelton and musical guest Vintage Trouble.
  • The Feb. 5 edition of “Late Night” presented “The Best of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: Guest Comedy.”

  • In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 4.3/11; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 2.4/6; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 2.1/5.
  • In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 1.2/5; "Late Show," 0.5/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.7/3.
  • From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.2/4 in metered-market households and a 0.4/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.
  • From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (2.1/7 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.3/4).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.8/5 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2).
  • At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 1.1/5 in metered-market households and a 0.5/4 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
