Shiver me timbers! Crossbones finally premieres tonight. Way back in May, 2012 NBC ordered ten episodes of the pirate drama. It was originally supposed to be a midseason series that premiered after Dracula ended its run. But NBC ended up running Hannibal Fridays at 10PM this spring. There are a lot of reasons that Crossbones might succeed. It stars John Malkovich, who has been playing memorable movie villains for decades as Blackbeard. It was created by Neil Cross, whose pedigree includes BBC's Luther. NBC successfully launched two other scripted shows this week, with 10PM drama The Night Shift earning a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating.
On the other hand, with all of the available real estate on NBC's summer schedule, the network's decision to keep Crossbones in the Friday 10PM timeslot could indicate a lack of confidence in the show. NBC's description of the premise: "Blackbeard has designs on the Longitude Chronometer, an invention that will change the world.... [English spy] Lowe’s mission is to prevent the Chronometer from falling into the hands of pirates," has a tinge of, "But Dracula's true agenda is to prevent the world from becoming dependent on fossil fuels." So how do you think Crossbones will fare tonight?
