'NBC Nightly News' Is Most Watched Newscast the Week of July 4

JULY 9, 2014 – “NBC Nightly News” was America’s most-watched newscast for the week ending July 4, 2014, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The NBC broadcast averaged 7.506 million total viewers, marking its 251st consecutive week at #1.


Season-to-date, Nightly is posting its biggest total viewer audience (9.069 million) since the 2005-06 season and its largest lead over ABC (+1.033 million) since the 2010-11 season. Nightly continues to post the largest season-to-season growth among the national evening newscasts, gaining +525,000 total viewers (+6%) and widening its advantage over ABC by +33%.


NOTE: Brian Williams was off Wednesday – Friday. All three evening newscasts are based on a 4-day average (Mon-Thurs) due to the July 4th holiday. Severe storms impacted viewing and clearances during the early part of the week.


Weekly Highlights:

  • Nightly delivered 7.506 million viewers, leading ABC World News by +68,000 and CBS Evening News by +1,760,000.
  • Nightly has won in total viewers for 251 consecutive weeks, and in 298 of the past 299 weeks.
  • Nightly averaged a 1.4 A25-54 rating, +3 tenths over CBS.
  • Among A25-54 (000), Nightly averaged 1.726 million viewers, outperforming CBS by +410,000.
