TNT has chalked up another ratings victory, ranking as basic cable's most-watched network in primetime for the month of July. Propelled by the strength of its original dramas – including the chart-topping series The Last Ship, Major Crimes and Rizzoli & Isles – TNT drew 2.1 million viewers in primetime for July, +5% ahead of its nearest competitor. TNT also ranked #1 for the final week of July, marking its fifth consecutive week in the winner's circle. TNT's ratings success in July follows its sweeping victory as basic cable's #1 network in Q2 2014.
Two thirds of the way through the summer season, TNT's dramas continue to dominate the competition. Rizzoli & Isles, Major Crimes and The Last Ship rank as basic cable's Top 3 most-watched scripted series for the summer-to-date and are joined by Falling Skies, Murder in the First and Perception in giving TNT six of basic cable's Top 10 scripted series this summer. In key demos, TNT's new hit The Last Ship leads the pack as TNT claims basic cable's Top 4 scripted series this summer with adults 25-54. And among adults 18-49, TNT holds three of the Top 5 scripted series this summer, with The Last Ship topping the list.
TNT's powerhouse dramas have drawn considerable strength from time-shifted viewing. According to the latest Live + 7 data, Rizzoli & Isles grew to a final tally of 8.0 million viewers; Major Crimes brought in more than 7.1 million viewers for its July 7 episode; The Last Ship scored more than 7.1 million viewers for its July 13 episode (+9% vs. the prior week); Falling Skies took in 4.8 million viewers for its July 13 episode; Murder in the First brought in 4.5 million viewers for its July 7 episode (+7% vs. the prior week); and Perception garnered 4.2 million viewers for the July 8 episode.
In other time-shifted viewing, last Monday's episode of Major Crimes scored the show's biggest Live + 3 audience so far this summer, with 7.3 million viewers (+4% vs. the prior week), along with 2.2 million adults 25-54 and 1.6 million adults 18-49. Also in Live + 3, the July 22 episode of Rizzoli & Isles has climbed to more than 7.5 million viewers (+6% vs. the prior week), including 2.6 million adults 25-54 (+9%) and 2.1 million adults 18-49 (+6%). And the July 20 episode of The Last Ship has drawn 6.0 million viewers in Live + 3 delivery, with 2.4 million adults 25-54 and 2.1 million adults 18-49 (+8% vs. the prior week). In addition, the July 22 episode of Perception has brought in 4.3 million viewers (+8% vs. the prior week) and 1.4 million adults 25-54 (+4%), while the July 20 episode of Falling Skies has drawn 4.2 million viewers in Live + 3, and the July 21 episode of Murder in the First is up to 4.0 million viewers in Live + 3.
Collectively, TNT's summer originals are bringing in many more viewers than last year. For the summer-to-date, the network's original series are averaging 5.7 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery, a +34% increase over the same time last year. Demo deliveries have grown by double-digit percentages, with this summer's TNT originals bringing in +19% more adults 25-54 and +13% more adults 18-49 than last summer.
Across July 2014, Cartoon Network ranked as television’s #1 network for Total Day delivery of boys 6-11 & 9-14, and #1 for Early Prime (6-8 p.m.) delivery among all boys 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14. Average Total Day delivery grew by double digits vs. July 2013 among kids 2-11 (+11%), kids 6-11 (+13%) and kids 9-14 (+13%). Prime delivery averages also were up by double digits among targeted kid demos, ranging between 10% and 12%.
With Thursday night serving as its weekly showcase for original animated comedies, Cartoon Network scored as the #1 television destination throughout July 2014 in Thursday Early Prime (6-8 p.m.) among kids 2-11 & 6-11 and all boys 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14. Overall, the night’s performance grew by powerful double and triple digits across all kids and boy demos vs. last year, ranging between 90% and 114%. Among the individual original animated series, Clarence (6:45 p.m.) charted as the #1 program of the day among boys 2-11 & 6-11. The Amazing World of Gumball (6:30 p.m.) and Clarence both ranked #1 in their respective time periods among all targeted boys, while the Emmy-winning Adventure Time (7 p.m.) ranked #1 in its timeslot among boys 6-11 & 9-14. All Thursday night new episode premieres grew kids/boys delivery by double and triple-digits vs. the same time period last year, ranging between 83% and 149%.
With Thursday night in position as its ratings locomotive, Cartoon Network also ranked as the #1 television network vs. all TV among all boys 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14 in Early Prime (6-8 p.m.) on Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Friday night and Sunday night. Additionally, the network ranked #1 among boys 2-11 & 6-11 in Early Prime on Saturday Night. Tuesday and Wednesday night performance averages also increased among all targeted kids 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14 and boys 9-14 vs. the same time period last year. Friday night’s performance grew overall for the month among kids/boys 9-14.
Saturday morning programming (7-11 a.m.) earned year-over-year delivery gains – between 7% and 30% – among all targeted kids 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14 and boys 2-11 & 6-11. Pokémon the Series XY (8 a.m.) ranked #1 in its timeslot among boys 9-14, and posted double-digit growth across the board.
Across July 2014, Adult Swim ranked #1 in Primetime delivery on basic cable among adults 18-34. Adult Swim’s Total Day performance also ranked #1 on basic cable in July among adults 18-24, 18-34 & 18-49 and men 18-24, 18-34 & 18-49.
Among Adult Swim’s original programming in July, Loiter Squad (Thursday, 12 a.m.) ranked #1 in its time period among all targeted adults/men 18-24, 18-34 & 18-49, posting year-over-year delivery gains among adults 18-49 (+10%) and men 18-49 (+8%). The Emmy-winning Robot Chicken (Sunday, 11:30 p.m.) also ranked #1 in its time period among all targeted adults 18-24, 18-34 & 18-49 and men 18-24/18-34, and increased delivery vs. the 2013 time period among men 18-34 & 19-49. Also throughout July, Superjail (11:45 p.m.) ranked #1 in its time period among all adults 18-24, 18-34 & 18-49 and men 18-34 & 18-49.
With the Saturday night TOONAMI Block (11:30 p.m.-3 a.m.), One Piece (Saturday, 1:30 a.m.) ranked #1 in its timeslot among adults 18-24 and men 18-24/18-34, while Blue Exorcist (2 a.m.) ranked #1 in its time period among adults 18-24.
Adult Swim programming in July 2014 – including Family Guy and American Dad – accounted for 32 of the top 50 telecasts on basic cable among adults 18-34 for the month, and 23 of the top 50 with men 18-34, both more than any other network.
Among TBS's successes for the week, Tuesday night's episode of Sullivan & Son drew more than 1.6 million viewers in Live + 3 delivery, including 852,000 million adults 18-49 and 312,000 adults 18-34. In addition, The Big Bang Theory on TBS had another winning month as it ranked as the #1 off-net comedy on basic cable among total viewers.
truTV's popular show Impractical Jokers drew 1.2 million viewers in Live + Same Day delivery last Thursday, including 743,000 adults 18-49. The series ranked as one of basic cable's Top 5 programs in its timeslot with key adult and male demos, with a remarkably young median age of only 34.
