‘Containment’ ending after 1 season on The CW, because ‘limited series’

Call it a cancellation, or call it a “limited series” playing out its season-long arc and then ending. Either way, The CW series will not return in 2016-17.

The decision came down Thursday in the wake of the network picking up three new series and acquiring “Supergirl” from CBS. That gives The CW 15 scripted hour-long series for next season — on a network that programs only 10 hours a week. That’s a deeper bench than it usually has, which may have rendered “Containment” superfluous.

The show, about the aftermath of a viral outbreak in which residents of Atlanta are quarantined, has averaged a 0.5 same-day rating in adults 18-49 through four episodes. That puts it in the middle of the CW pack. It will air its full complement of episodes, with the finale coming in the summer.

“Containment” joins these shows that aren’t returning after the 2015-16 season.
