NBC adds ‘Marlon’ and ‘Great News’ to 2016-17 comedy lineup

Two more comedies are joining NBC’s 2016-17 roster: “Marlon” and “Great News.”

The two pickups join three other new comedies (“Powerless,” “The Good Place” and “Trial & Error”), plus the returning “Superstore,” on the network’s slate for next season. That could represent a notable uptick for NBC, which never had more than three comedies on the air in a given week this season.

“Marlon” stars and is executive produced by Marlon Wayans. He plays a divorced, not entirely grown-up father to two kids who’s all in on raising them along with his ex-wife (Essence Atkins).

“Great News” stars Briga Heelan (“Undateable”) as a TV news producer whose mother (Andrea Martin), who’s just re-entering the workforce, lands an internship at her station. Tracey Wigfield wrote the pilot and is executive producing with her former “30 Rock” bosses Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
