‘The Carmichael Show’ renewed for Season 3 at NBC

“The Carmichael Show’s” time in TV purgatory is done: NBC has renewed the show for a third season in 2016-17.

The pickup comes just a few hours after NBC announced its 2016-17 schedule — without “Carmichael” on it. Sunday morning, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters the network and 20th Century Fox TV, which produces the show, were “going back and forth about the number of episodes” for Season 3.

That number turned out to be 13, the same as the show produced for this season. That’s shorter than a typical show entering its third season, but Greenblatt said NBC needed to account for the number of new shows (12 scripted series in all) it has and fit everything on the schedule.

With NBC’s fall lineup already announced, “The Carmichael Show” will presumably debut sometime in 2017. NBC also has four new comedies (“Great News,” “Marlon,” “Powerless” and “Trial & Error”) on tap for the second half of the season.
