Variety’s Brian Lowry writes that the Friday scripted shows are about milking more money from advertisers, especially since the upfront market was predicted to improve this year.
Everyone has also rediscovered Friday night — at least, until the scripted shows fail and reality TV is thrown into the breach. It’s a shrewd if familiar way to try to get more money out of advertisers and fully capitalize on anticipated improvement in this year’s upfront market.
That makes a lot more sense to me than any rebirth of scripted Fridays. “Rediscovered” depends on your time reference. There are as many original scripted hours on this coming fall’s schedule as there were last fall. But there are many more hours than are currently on the schedule, which plays well with Mr. Lowry’s thinking.
