Backstrom pilot

Tonight, drama Backstrom premieres on FOX. The series is about a brilliant cop who is a politically incorrect jerk, a premise that calls to mind the network’s long-running hit House. It also is similar to Rake, the series that premiered after the Thursday edition of American Idol last season. That one was about a smart but self-destructive lawyer AKA House: Attorney at Law. It premiered to a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating, fell to a 1.3 the next week and kept declining until it was bumped to Friday, where it fell so low that it was pulled from the line-up and ended its run with the dreaded Saturday burn-off.  Backstrom is a lighter, more fun show than Rake that may prove more popular with viewers. It could also benefit from heavy promotion during FOX’s new ratings phenomenon Empire. Will lightning strike twice with Backstrom becoming the new House? Or is the “brilliant at his job but a miserable human being” concept played out? Make your prediction, then discuss what version of this series FOX will launch next season in the comments. (An accountant? A zoo keeper?)
