“World News with Diane Sawyer” Closes Weekly Total Viewing and Demo Gaps

with NBC to Smallest Margin Since October 2009

“World News” Increases Leads Over CBS

Week-to-Week and Year-to-Year

For the week of April 19, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 7.08 million Total Viewers and a 1.5/7 among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. “World News” grew its Total Viewing audience 2% week-to-week.

Compared to the previous week, “World News” closed the Total Viewing gap (560,000) with “NBC Nightly News” by 20% and the demo gap (280,000) by 24%. This marks the smallest weekly gaps between ABC and NBC since October 2009. In addition, year-to-year “World News” cut into “Nightly’s” lead among Total Viewers by 15% and Adults 25-54 by 10%.

Year-to-year, “World News’” total viewing lead over “CBS Evening News” was 18% larger, and its demo lead increased by 8%. Furthermore, “World News” increased its weekly Total Viewing advantage (1,990,000) over “CBS Evening News” by 3% and its demo advantage (430,000) by 13%. This marks the largest weekly demo lead over CBS since February.

Last week, “World News” continued to cover the Iceland volcano and its impact on both sides of the Atlantic. “World News” also followed Republicans and Democrats as they worked towards an agreement on financial reform. Jon Karl provided an exclusive report on SEC employees spending hours on porn sites while at work, and Brian Ross reported on Naomi Campbell’s refusal to cooperate in the ‘crimes against humanity’ trial against African dictator Charles Taylor.
