Continuing our hour by hour coverage of the fall schedule, we move to Wednesday nights at 8pm. Two fresh faces in this hour, NBC’s Undercovers and the ABC sitcom Better With You . The rest are veterans: America’s Next Top Model, Hell’s Kitchen, Lie to Me, The Middle and Survivor which moves to Wednesday from Thursday.
Wednesday Night 8pm-9pm:
|The Middle||Better With You New|
|America’s Next Top Model|
|Hell’s Kitchen/Lie to Me*|
*Hell’s Kitchen will occupy the time slot from September 22 until Lie to Me makes its season premiere on November 10. Between September 22-November 10, double episodes of Hell’s Kitchen will run between 8p-10p. Also note that due to baseball playoffs, pre-emptions for baseball are a likely on FOX in October.
Despite the new day, I expect Survivor to win the hour, and likely easily. Once Hell’s Kitchen is out of the way, it could be the case that no other show gets within a full adults 18-49 ratings point of it.
It’s hard to fathom Lie to Me taking off at this point, so I don’t.
It will be interesting to see how The Middle does at 8:00 pm. Most of the latter part of last season ABC ran repeats of The Middle at 8pm with an original at 8:30p. The numbers bounced around mostly in the low to mid 2.x range at 8:30p. It will be interesting to see how Better With You does at 8:30p, especially if it doesn’t do as well as The Middle did and is perceived in any way to be negatively impacting Modern Family at 9pm.
While it was hard to imagine Lie to Me taking off at this point, it’s even harder to imagine NBC having any success with scripted content at 8pm on Wednesdays. That’s probably unfair to Undercovers and I know past performance is not necessarily an indicator of future results, but there sure is a lot of past performance data and none of it is very good.
Because it’s NBC, Undercovers probably doesn’t have to perform great, but we’re literally one sub 2.0 adults 18-49 rating away from throngs of Chuck fans demanding Chuck be moved to Wednesdays at 8pm. Brace for it people!
Though nobody should be surprised if America’s Next Top Model’s ratings continue to erode, nobody should be surprised either if it’s still one of CW’s top performers.
Next Wednesday (August 25) I’ll cover Wednesday from 9pm-10pm, tomorrow (Thursday, August 19) I’ll cover Thursday at 8pm. Within a few weeks, every hour of the schedule will be covered. You can find all the hour-by-hour coverage here.
