ABC Grows its Overall Late-Night Audience for the 2nd Straight Week

ABC’s “Nightline” Beats CBS’ “Letterman” for the 19th Straight Week in
Adults 18-49, its Longest-Ever Stretch of Consecutive Wins over the CBS Program

ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Tops CBS’ “Ferguson” in Adults 18-49
by Double-Digit Percentages in 4 of 5 Nights of the Week


ABC Late-Night (Monday – Friday)

During the week of June 27, 2011, which led into the 4th of July holiday weekend, ABC saw week-to-week increases in late-night in both Total Viewers (+2% – 2.103 million vs. 2.062 million) and Adults 18-49 (+6% – 750,000 vs. 709,000), growing its overall audience for the 2nd straight week. Additionally, ABC was up over the year-ago week (w/o 6/28/10) in both viewers (+1% – 2.103 million vs. 2.087 million) and young adults (+6% – 750,000 vs. 710,000).


“Nightline” (Monday – Friday)

During the week of June 27, 2011, ABC’s “Nightline” ranked No. 1 among the late-night programs, turning in a 3-week high performance (best since w/o 6/6/11) across each of the key target demos: Total Viewers (3.788 million), Adults 25-54 (1.436 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.100 million), according to Nielsen Media Research. In addition, for the 3rd time in the last 5 weeks, the ABC late-night program improved on its year-earlier numbers in all 3 measures: Total Viewers (+8%), Adults 25-54 (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+2%).


“Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Show with David Letterman” by 12% in Total Viewers, by 7% in Adults 25-54 and by 7% in Adults 18-49. In fact, this represents the 19th straight week that “Nightline” defeated “The Late Show” in Adults 18-49, marking its longest-stretch ever of consecutive wins over the CBS late-night program.


Season to date, “Nightline” ranks first in late-night among Total Viewers and Adults 25-54. This is the first time ever that “Nightline” has been in first place at this point in the season since at least the 1993-94 season, when “Letterman” began on CBS. In addition, “Nightline” is up by 5% in Total Viewers and by 4% in Adults 25-54 compared to the same point last year. Season to date, “Nightline” is drawing its largest overall audience in 8 years – since the 2002-03 season.


“Jimmy Kimmel Live” (Monday – Friday)

During the week of June 27, 2011, ABC’sJimmy Kimmel Live” grew its overall audience for the 2nd consecutive week (1.522 million vs. 1.504 million), while also building over the prior week by 6% in Adults 18-49 (629,000 vs. 591,000). In addition, “JKL” saw increases of 11% in young adults over the same week last year (565,000 on w/o 6/28/10), posting the largest year-to-year increase of any late-night broadcast program.


  • ABC’s “JKL” drew a larger weekly audience than CBS’ “Late Late Show with Ferguson” (1.522 million vs. 1.511 million) for the 16th week running. “JKL” also beat “Ferguson” by 15% in Adults 18-49 (629,000 vs. 545,000), leading the CBS late-night program by double-digit percentages in 4 of 5 nights of the week in the young adult demo: Tuesday (+10% – 568,000 vs. 518,000), Wednesday (+21% – 612,000 vs. 507,000), Thursday (+25% – 730,000 vs. 584,000) and Friday (+28% – 641,000 vs. 500,000).
