ABC’s “Nightline” is Late-Night’s No. 1 Program for the 5th Time in the Last 6 Weeks


ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Draws its Biggest Audience in Nearly 5 Months


ABC Late-Night (Monday – Friday)

With its late-night lineup of “Nightline” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” during the week of April 2, 2012, ABC delivered its 2nd straight week of gains in Adults 18-49 (+1% – 778,000 vs. 774,000). ABC also grew over the year-ago week (week of 4/4/11) by 4% in Total Viewers (2.398 million vs. 2.314 million) to stand as the only broadcaster in late-night to build its overall audience (CBS was down -1%; NBC was down -1%).


  • For the 2nd consecutive week and the 4th time in the last 5 weeks, ABC qualified as the most-watched network in late-night in Total Viewers (2.398 million), topping CBS by 8% (2.229 million) and NBC by 6% (2.255 million).


  • ABC topped NBC for the 4th week in a row in Adults 18-49, beating NBC during the week by 8% (778,000 vs. 721,000).


“Nightline” (Monday – Friday)

ABC’s “Nightline” stood as the No. 1 program in late-night for the 2nd week in a row in all key target demos: Total Viewers (3.951 million), Adults 25-54 (1.437 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.095 million), for the week of April 2, 2012, according to Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” has ranked No. 1 in all 3 measures for the 5th time in the last 6 weeks.

Season to date, “Nightline” ranks No. 1 in late-night among Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49, ahead of both NBC’s “The Tonight Show” and CBS’ “The Late Show.” This marks the 2nd straight year that the ABC program has taken the top spot in overall viewers and in the key adult news demo.


“Jimmy Kimmel Live” (Monday – Friday)

During the week of April 2, 2012, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” was up over the prior week in both Total Viewers (+2% – 1.874 million vs. 1.830 million) and Adults 18-49 (+7% – 671,000 vs. 630,000) to attract its biggest audience since November – since the week of 11/21/11. In addition, “JKL” grew its overall audience by 5% over the same week last year (1.789 million on w/o 4/4/11).


  • During the week, ABC’s “JKL” stood as the No. 3 late-night talk show in Total Viewers (1.874 million), behind only NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (3.664 million) and CBS’ “The Late Show with David Letterman” (3.075 million).


  • ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (M-F 12:00 a.m.) outdrew NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (M-F 12:35 a.m.) by double-digit margins for the 2nd week in a row in Total Viewers (+14% – 1.874 million vs. 1.640 million), while also scoring its 2nd straight win over the NBC late-night program in Adults 18-49 (+8% – 671,000 vs. 623,000). “JKL” topped “Fallon” in both viewers and young adults on 4 of 5 days of the week. In fact, for the 2nd consecutive week, a repeat telecast of “JKL” on Friday outperformed an original telecast of “Fallon” in both Total Viewers (+7% – 1.879 million vs. 1.755 million) and Adults 18-49 (+8% – 687,000 vs. 635,000).


  • ABC’s “JKL” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (M-F 12:35 a.m.) by impressive double-digits in both Total Viewers (+32% – 1.874 million vs. 1.419 million) and Adults 18-49 (+15% – 671,000 vs. 586,000), marking the 22nd time in the 29 weeks of the season for the ABC late-night program to beat the CBS program in both Nielsen measures. In fact, “JKL” has drawn a larger overall audience than “Ferguson” in 28 of the 29 weeks this season.


  • Season to date (29 weeks), “JKL” is building its overall audience over the comparable weeks last year by 3% in Total Viewers (1.766 million vs. 1.721 million), growing the most year to year of any late-night broadcast talk show.
