Ratings Report for ABC News’ “Nightline”

For the Week of February 9, 2009

ABC News’ “Nightline” continues to grow season to date, first quarter to date and year to year, according to Nielsen Media Research for the week of February 9, 2009. In addition, week to week “Nightline” cut the Adults 25-54 gap to 510,000 with NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and the total viewing gap with NBC to its smallest in a month.

Compared to the same week last year, “Nightline” is the only program to grow among both Total Viewers and A25-54, while “Letterman” and “Leno” declined. “Nightline” increased 18% in Total Viewers and 6% among Adults 25-54, while “Leno” declined 10% among A25-54 and 8% in Total Viewers. “Letterman” decreased 4% among Adults 25-54.

“Nightline” posted 3.78 million, increasing 20% first quarter to date, while “Letterman” declined 7% and “Leno” remained flat.  Among the key Adults 25-54 demographic, “Nightline” posted 1.63 million, increasing 8% quarter to date, while “Letterman” dropped 13% and “Leno” declined 4%.

Season to date, “Nightline” increased 13% among Total Viewers and 5% among Adults 25-54. The program is also in second place among Adults 25-54 season to date.

“Nightline” continues to close the A25-54 and total viewing gaps with NBC’s “Leno.” Compared to the same week last year, “Nightline” shrank the total viewing gap with “Leno” by 47% and the A25-54 gap by 40%. Year to date, “Nightline” shrank the total viewing gap with NBC by 33% and the A25-54 gap by 30%.

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
