Following the already announced series orders, The CW has added yet another DC live-action original series to its 2017-18 schedule, along with a new series led by a well-versed TV veteran.
As previous speculation and reports had hinted at, the network has officially put in a series order for “Black Lightning.” Joining “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “Legends of Tomorrow,” this makes “Black Lightning” the fifth in the network’s growing lineup of live-action DC Comics series.
The series stars Cress Williams (“Hart of Dixie”) as Jefferson Pierce, the hero who hung up his suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, is about to be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning. “Black Lightning” comes from a pilot script written by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, who will serve as executive producers along with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. The series also stars Nafessa Williams, China Anne McClain and Christine Adams.
In addition to “Black Lightning,” The CW has put in a series order for the Lucy Hale-led “Life Sentence.” Coming from Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith, the series stars Hale as Stella, who after being diagnosed with terminal cancer finds out that she’s not actually dying after all. As a result, Stella is forced to learn to live with the decisions she made when she decided to “live like she was dying.” Dylan Walsh, Gillian Vigman, Elliot Knight, Carlos PenaVega, Jayson Blair, and Brooke Lyons also star.
Both Cardillo and Keith will serve as executive producers on “Life Sentence,” along with Bill Lawrence and Jeff Ingold. The project comes from Doozer Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
“Black Lightning” and “Life Sentence” are the latest series announced to be joining the CW’s 2017-18 lineup, following the pick-ups of both the military drama “Valor,” and a new reboot of “Dynasty” earlier today.
