Ever since “Constantine” was canceled following a single season on NBC, there have been rumblings about a possible renewal on The CW, where DC’s TV shows have truly begun to shine and get attention.

Thanks to a surprising announcement Sunday, it looks like “Constantine” may have found new life after all, though not in the way that some fans might have expected.

Revealed by the network winter TV press tour, The CW will be bringing back the Matt Ryan-led “Constantine” for another season as an animated series on its streaming service, The CW Seed. The series will consist of several 10-minute episodes and will premiere sometime during the 2017-18 season. It joins fellow DC animated series “Vixen,” which just premiered its second season back in October on CW Seed. Matt Ryan, who played John Constantine in the live-action series, will return to voice the character once again in the new endeavor.

Despite consistently low ratings on NBC, “Constantine” managed to assemble a passionate and dedicated fan base following both during its run and in the years after its cancellation.

Rumors of a possible renewal of the series by The CW began to run around when Ryan was hired to cameo as the character in the fourth season of “Arrow” as well, though it had seemed like no progress had been made on bringing the character back in his own series since then. This news comes just following the other major announcement made by The CW, when the network renewed all four of its DC TV shows, as well as three other veterans.
