Much to the chagrin of the show’s avid group of supporters, the story of Allison Tolman’s Nan and her canine best friend has reached an early end.
ABC has officially canceled “Downward Dog” after just one season, series creator Samm Hodges announced on Twitter Friday afternoon. Based on the web series of the same name by Hodges and co-creator Michael Killen, the series followed Martin (voiced by Hodges), a smart dog trying to find his way through the complex relationship dynamics of the 21st century, while fighting to make sure his owner, Nan, never stops paying enough attention to him. In addition to Tolman, the series starred Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart and Maria Bamford.
The announcement of the cancellation comes with still two more episodes left to air in the season, which ABC will air back-to-back on June 27. It will likely come as a surprise to most fans, since not only did the series have some strong initial backing from ABC, but emerged as one of the more critically acclaimed freshman comedies of the year, after making its initial premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January of this year.
However, while the series had been doing well critically, it hadn’t quite managed to break through in the ratings. After averaging only a 0.7 in the adults 18-49 demographic throughout its season, the viewership numbers just weren’t enough to match the costs of actually making the series.
“Got the very surprising news that ABC is not moving forward with ‘Downward Dog,'” Hodges and Killen wrote in response to the news. “They loved it creatively and really wanted to make more, but couldn’t find a financial path to do so. That’s not a bulls**t PR statement, that’s true, and we are deeply personally thankful to them for putting this first season on the air and allowing us to make something really unique and uncompromising. Obviously this is a hard moment, but we’re not done. The crazy amazing love you the fans have shown for DD combined with the critical response make us confident that there is a future and we are committed to finding a new home. ABC is airing the last two episodes of season one on Tuesday at 10/9 central. Watch and show the world how much you care! Thanks for your love and support.”
