Lifetime is looking to further expand its lineup of original scripted programming, this time with one of the most successful TV creators of this generation.
This afternoon, the network has officially put in a series order for the new Jenji Kohan drama, “American Princess.” It comes from writer and executive producer, Jamie Denbo, who starred as Shelly on Kohan’s “Orange is the New Black,” with Kohan serving as an additional executive producer on the project alongside Tara Hermann.
Created by Denbo, “American Princess” is said to follow a New York socialite named Amanda, when her fairytale wedding plans are ruined just hours before she is set to make her vows official, after discovering her fiance is cheating on her. Outraged, Amanda reacts violently to the news and goes on the run, finding herself stranded in the middle of a countryside Renaissance Faire. But through this breakdown, Amanda will begin to reevaluate her life and past choices, leading to her becoming the Faire’s “newest wench-in-waiting.”
“Jenji has always taken interesting and unconventional worlds and given them heart and humor,” said Liz Gateley, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming at Lifetime. “From the get-go, American Princess was a concept we loved as it’s incredibly relatable to want to parachute from one’s life in difficult times. In Jenji, Jamie and Tara’s hands, we know this will be hilarious and special.”
“In the current landscape of scripted television programs, American Princess is a true standout,” added Paul Buccieri, President of A+E Studios and A+E Networks Portfolio Group. “This series continues building on the premium storytelling that is a foundation of A+E Studios, and we are thrilled to partner with IM Global.”
“American Princess” will be the third series Kohan has had a hand in that is on the air right now, in addition to Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” and this year’s freshman hit series, “GLOW.”
