The good news for fans of “Suits” and actress Gina Torres: She’s set to reprise her role as attorney Jessica Pearson in the Season 7 finale.
The better news: That episode will serve as a back-door pilot for a spinoff centered on Jessica.
The bad news: The season finale isn’t set to air until early next year, which means the spinoff — should it be picked up to series — probably won’t be on the air before mid-2018.
The spinoff will be set in Chicago and find Jessica getting involved in the city’s down-and-dirty political world. “Suits” regulars Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman and Meghan Markle will all be on hand for the episode.
“The powerhouse character of Jessica Pearson, expertly brought to life by the incomparable Gina Torres, has won the hearts of television fans everywhere,” USA chief Chris McCumber says in a statement. “USA Network is beyond thrilled to work with Gina, [‘Suits’ creator] Aaron Korsh, the entire ‘Suits’ producing team and our partners at [Universal Cable Productions] to explore the exciting next phase of Jessica’s story.”
Torres left “Suits” midway through last season in an amicable parting of the ways; she had told producers of the Toronto-based show she wanted to spend more time at home in Los Angeles. Her last episode as a series regular set up Jessica’s move to Chicago.
Torres made a return appearance in the sixth-season finale and has appeared in a couple episodes of the current season as well.
Korsh and fellow “Suits” EP Daniel Arkin will write the script for the finale/spinoff pilot. Frequent “Suits” director Anton Cropper is on board to direct.
