Two more ABC comedies have found new life in the 2017-18 season, following an announcement by the network early this afternoon.
Both “Speechless” and “Fresh Off the Boat” have, predictably, been renewed for new seasons by ABC today. Neither renewals come as much of a surprise, considering how well they’ve both been performing in the ratings throughout each of their respective seasons this year.
While its lead-outs have struggled to find a similar success, “Fresh Off the Boat” has managed to stay consistent in the 9 p.m. time slot on Tuesday nights, averaging a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49 throughout its current third season. It will return for a fourth season then later this year, with showrunner Nahnatchka Khan staying on at the helm.
Meanwhile, “Speechless” has remained one of ABC’s more successful freshman comedies of the season. After premiering back in October to a 2.0, the series has managed to remain fairly high in the ratings ever since, with the series’ latest episode scoring a 1.1 in the live + same day ratings. With consistently positive critical reviews and an experienced, talented creative team behind it, this renewal comes as a no-brainer for the network. “Speechless” will conclude its first season next week.
“Speechless” and “Fresh Off the Boat” join a growing list of series renewed by ABC for the 2017-18 season. Fellow returning titles include “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” “Black-ish,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Designated Survivor,” and more. Make sure to keep checking back for more updates from the network as they come along.
