ABC is the No. 1 Network in Late-Night in Viewers in 2Q11

ABC Late-Night (Monday – Friday)

During the 2nd Quarter 2011, ABC was up 4% over the year-ago quarter in Total Viewers (2.397 million vs. 2.299 million), growing year to year for the 4th time in the last 5 quarters. In fact, ABC turned in its 2nd-most-watched 2Q ever in late-night (ABC late-night began 1Q03). In addition, ABC qualified as the only broadcast network to post year-to-year increases in late-night in viewers (CBS was down -3%, NBC was flat).

 

Building on the prior quarter for the 3rd quarter in a row in Adults 18-49 (+2% – 888,000 vs. 869,000), ABC delivered its strongest performance for any quarter in late-night in 1 year – since 2Q10. The Net also scored its most-watched quarter (2.397 million) in 10 quarters (since 4Q08) and qualified as the only broadcast network in late-night to post increases over 1Q11 in Total Viewers (CBS was down -3%, NBC was flat).

 

  • During 2Q11, ABC (2.397 million) was the No. 1 network in late-night in Total Viewers, beating both CBS (2.395 million) and NBC (2.377 million).

  • ABC beat CBS in late-night during 2Q11 by 5% in Adults 18-49 (888,000 vs. 847,000).

During the week of June 20, 2011, ABC posted week-to-week gains of 6% in Total Viewers (2.062 million vs. 1.952 million), delivering the largest increase over the prior week in late-night of all the broadcast networks (CBS was down -8%, NBC was up +3%).

 

  • For the week, ABC beat CBS in both Total Viewers (+3% – 2.062 million vs. 2.002 million) and Adults 18-49 (+9% – 709,000 vs. 650,000).

“Nightline” (Monday – Friday)

During the 2nd Quarter 2011, ABC’s “Nightline” ranked No. 1 across all key target demos: Total Viewers (4.074 million), Adults 25-54 (1.662 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.297 million), marking the 2nd quarter in a row that the ABC program topped NBC’s “The Tonight Show” and CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman,” according to Nielsen Media Research.  2Q11 represents the first time ever for “Nightline” to rank No. 1 during a 2nd quarter in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49, beating both “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show”.  In addition, “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers for the first time during a 2nd quarter in 16 years – since 2Q95.  

 

“Nightline” posted across-the-board increases versus the previous quarter (1Q11): Total Viewers (+2%), Adults 25-54 (+1%) and Adults 18-49 (+2%), standing as the only late-night program among its late-night rivals to grow in all 3 Nielsen measures.  Further, “Nightline” generated its largest overall quarter audience in 8 years – since 2Q03.

For the 2nd year in a row, “Nightline” was up over the year-ago 2nd quarter in Total Viewers (+10%) and Adults 25-54 (+5%).  Additionally, “Nightline” scored its best Adults 25-54 2nd quarter performance in 5 years – since 2Q06.

 

  • “Nightline” defeated NBC’s “The Tonight Show” by 198,000 Total Viewers, by 51,000 Adult 25-54 viewers and by 14,000 Adult 18-49 viewers during 2Q11, outperforming the NBC late-night program for the first time during a 2nd Quarter in 16 years – since 2Q95.

 

  • “Nightline” produced its largest quarter lead over CBS’ “The Late Show” in at least 11 years in each of the target demos: Total Viewers (+794,000 –since 3Q99), Adults 25-54 (+251,000 – since 2Q00) and Adults 18-49 (+249,000 – since 2Q99).

During the week of June 20, 2011, ABC’s “Nightline took second across all key target demos — Total Viewers (3.581 million), Adults 25-54 (1.376 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.031 million) — according to Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” topped CBS’ “The Late Show with David Letterman” by 26% in Total Viewers, by 22% in Adults 25-54 and by 22% in Adults 18-49. For the 3rd time in the last
4 weeks,Nightline was up over the year-ago week in Total Viewers (+3%). In fact, “Nightline” saw year-to-year gains in its overall audience in 17 of the last 19 weeks.

 

Season to date,Nightline ranks first in late-night among Total Viewers and Adults 25-54. This is the first time ever that “Nightline” has been in first place at this point in the season since at least the 1993-94 season, when “Letterman” began on CBS.  In addition, “Nightline” is up by 5% in Total Viewers and by 4% in Adults 25-54 compared to the same point last year. Season to dateNightline is drawing its largest overall audience in 8 years – since the 2002-03 season.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” (Monday – Friday)

During the 2nd Quarter 2011, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” scored its most-watched quarter (1.783 million) in 14 quarters – since 4Q07. Building its numbers for the 3rd straight quarter in Adults 18-49 (738,000), “JKL” turned in its best quarter in 9 quarters (since 1Q08) in the key young adult demo. Building by 6% over the previous quarter in Total Viewers and by 3% in Adults 18-49, ABC’s “JKL” stood as the only entertainment broadcast program in late-night to grow its overall audience over 1st Quarter 2011.

 

“JKL” grew its overall audience over the year-ago quarter (+4% – 1.783 million vs. 1.708 million) for the 5th time in as many quarters, scoring its most-watched 2Q ever. Posting the biggest year-to-year gain of any late-night broadcast program in Adults 18-49 (+3%-tie – 738,000 vs. 714,000), “JKL” grew its young adult audience for the 4th time in the last 5 quarters.

  • During 2Q11, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” bettered CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” by its largest margin ever in Total Viewers (+10% – 1.783 million vs. 1.625 million), topping the CBS late-night program in all 13 weeks of the quarter. In addition, “JKL” beat “Ferguson” in Adults 18-49 (+10% – 738,000 vs. 672,000) for the 5th quarter in a row.

  • ABC’s “JKL” drew a larger overall audience during 2Q11 than NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (1.783 million vs. 1.773 million).

  • With 12 wins in the last 13 weeks, ABC’s “JKL” outperformed TBS’ “Conan” by 7% in Adults 18-49 (738,000 vs. 688,000).

 

During the week of June 20, 2011, ABC’sJimmy Kimmel Live” grew its overall audience week to week (+6% – 1.504 million vs. 1.413 million), posting the largest weekly increase of any late-night broadcast program.

 

  • ABC’s “JKL” bested CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” by 19% in Total Viewers (1.504 million vs. 1.262 million) to score its 15th straight weekly win, and outperformed the CBS late-night program in Adults 18-49 (+25% – 591,000 vs. 474,000) for the 5th week in a row.

  • ABC’s “JKL” topped TBS’ “Conan” by 7% in Adults 18-49 (591,000 vs. 551,000), marking its 13th win in 14 weeks over the TBS late-night program.
