ESPN Scores Most-Watched & Highest-Rated NBA Christmas Tripleheader Ever
Record Prime-Time Doubleheader Helps ESPN Win the Night Among Men
ESPN delivered an average of 2,962,000 viewers based on a 1.8 U.S. household rating for its 2013 NBA Christmas tripleheader, making it the network’s most-watched and highest-rated Christmas tripleheader ever, according to Nielsen. The record figures surpassed last year’s totals – the previous records — in viewership by 5% (2,819,000) and in ratings by 6% (1.7).
Additionally, NBA action helped ESPN win the night among men on Christmas for all networks (broadcast or cable). Overall, the 2013 evening telecasts set records for an ESPN prime-time Christmas doubleheader, averaging 3,044,000 viewers and a 1.9 U.S. household rating, representing a 30% increase in viewership (2,347,000) and 36% increase in ratings (1.4) from last year. The previous highs for an ESPN Christmas prime-time doubleheader came in 2011: 2,789,000 viewers, 1.7 U.S. household rating.
Individually, viewership for ESPN’s Christmas coverage was led by the Houston at San Antonio telecast (8 p.m. ET), which was seen by an ESPN Christmas prime-time record 3,395,000 viewers (2.0 U.S. household rating). The 12 p.m. Chicago at Brooklyn matchup generated an audience of 2,779,000 viewers (1.6 U.S. household rating), while Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State was viewed by 2,730,000 people (1.8 U.S. household rating).
ESPN NBA RATINGS UP FOR 2013-14 SEASON
Overall on the season, ESPN’s NBA viewership and ratings are now up 4% and 8%, respectively. The network is averaging 1,920,000 viewers (up from 1,849,000) and a 1.3 U.S. household rating (up from 1.2).
