Writers Imbedded with Los Angeles Lakers & Miami Heat

Provide Exclusive Season-Long Backstage Pass

Los Angeles – As the curtain rises on the 2010-11 NBA season, most fans’ eyes are on two teams in warm weather cities over 2700 miles apart, one with a “Big Three” and the other shooting for a dynastic “Three-Peat.”  That’s why tomorrow debuts HEAT OR 3PEAT?, an unprecedented season-long inside look at the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat.

While the incomparable Kobe Bryant/Phil Jackson-led Lakers have won back-to-back NBA Championships and have their sites set on a third, it was the opportunistic Heat who garnered the lion’s share of attention this off-season by signing super star free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh to play alongside the extraordinary Dwayne Wade – the “Big Three.”  Most pre-season prognosticators anticipate that come June the Lakers and Heat are destined to meet in the NBA Finals.

In HEAT OR 3PEAT?, chronicles each team’s journey from backstage, through the eyes of two veteran sports journalists embedded with each team at home and on the road all season long.  Bill Reiter has been assigned to cover the Heat, while his counterpart on the Lakers’ beat is Billy Witz.

“Neither reporter is writing game stories.  That’s not what this is about,” said Senior Vice President/Editor-in-Chief Rick Jaffe about the Reiter/Witz assignments.  “We’re looking for them to write what amounts to a book chronicling the inner-workings of each team over the season’s eight months, with each story filed being the latest chapter.”

The HEAT OR 3PEAT? project is being conducted in conjunction with two of FOX’s regional sports networks, FS Florida and FS West.  While a special “event page”’ is located on, most of their stories are housed on each network’s respective local web site, and  In addition to their stories, HEAT OR 3PEAT? also features highlight video housed on the local sites, along with post game interviews, commentary and press conference coverage.  Both reporters are also expected to conduct weekly live chats.

Once the season matures, both Reiter and Witz are expected to appear on the Lakers and Heat pre and post game shows each local network televises, as well as two appearances a week on the FOX Sports Radio Network.

Reiter spent the last four years as the sports enterprise reporter for The Kansas City Star.  His work has been honored numerous times by the Associated Press Sports Editors and he’s a past winner of the Livingston Award for young journalists.  Before working at the Star, Reiter was a reporter for The Des Moines Register and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.  His work has also appeared in the Chicago Tribune, St. Louis Post Dispatch, The Washington Times and The (London) Express.  He also has the distinction of once interviewing former President Bill Clinton at a urinal.

Before joining, Witz worked for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Daily News and the Long Beach Press-Telegram.  He has also won Associated Press Sports Editor awards, his being for investigative reporting, feature writing and game stories.  The major sports events Witz has covered include the NCAA Men’s Final Four, Super Bowl, World Cup, Rose Bowl, BCS National Championship Game and NBA Finals.  He is a graduate of Tulane University.
