COMPARED TO THE SAME WEEK ONE YEAR AGO “NIGHTLY NEWS” IS UP SIGNIFICANTLY IN TOTAL VIEWERS AND A25-54 – WHILE ABC AND CBS ARE DOWN IN BOTH
NEW YORK – March 31, 2009 – According to Nielsen Media Research data, “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was the most-watched network evening newscast, winning the week of March 23-29, 2009. During the week, the Williams-led newscast averaged 9.206 million total viewers, +1.104 million more than ABC “World News'” 8.102 million, and +3.081 million more than CBS “Evening News'” 6.125 million. Season-to-date “Nightly” leads ABC by 802K viewers.
ABC “World News” was labeled as a breakout on Tuesday due to pre-emptions in western markets for President Obama’s primetime address, while CBS “Evening News” was a low coverage breakout on both Thursday and Friday due to NCAA Basketball. These days are not included in the weekly or season averages.
“Nightly” has won for 24 consecutive weeks in total viewers, and for eighteen straight weeks in A25-54. Versus the same week last season, “Nightly” increased in homes (+7%) and total viewers (+10% or +800,000).
Among the key demographic adults 25-54, “Nightly News” posted a 2.3 rating, ahead of ABC’s 1.9 rating and CBS’ 1.4 rating. “Nightly” led “World News” by +462,000 A25-54 viewers for the week. Season-to-date “Nightly” leads ABC by 308K A25-54 viewers. Versus the same week last season, “Nightly” increased in rating W/M/A25-54 (+14%/+17%/+15%).
In homes, “Nightly News” won with a 6.1 rating and a 12 share. In second place ABC drew a 5.5/11, and CBS posted a 4.1/8.
On its digital platforms, “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” continued its strong performance with more than 5.2 million online streams for the week ending March 28, 2009.
