Turner Broadcasting Q2 2013-to-Date
Network Ratings Highlights
Original series like Falling Skies, Major Crimes, Dallas, King & Maxwell and The Hero, combined with coverage of the NBA Playoffs, have put TNT on track to sweep primetime for the quarter among basic cable networks. The network currently tops the charts as basic cable’s #1 network among total viewers, adults 25-54, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. TNT is also on track to win the quarter among adults 25-54 in total day.
TNT is charting increases compared to Q2 2012, with primetime delivery of total viewers growing by +4%, Adults 25-54 by +6%, and adults 18-49 by +5%. In total day, TNT grew its delivery of total viewers by +3% and adults 25-54 by +3%.
Three of TNT’s series have ranked among basic cable’s Top 10 original dramas for the quarter with total viewers: Falling Skies (4.7 million viewers), Major Crimes (4.5 million viewers), and Dallas (3.8 million viewers). Falling Skies also ranks as one of basic cable’s Top 5 original dramas with adults 18-49 (2.1 million) and adults 25-54 (2.4 million).
TNT’s freshman drama King & Maxwell is one of basic cable’s Top 10 new series for the quarter with total viewers (3.2 million).
TNT’s competition series The Hero has gotten off to a solid start with 1.2 million viewers and 678,000 adults 25-54.
Fueled by breaking news and a broader range of programming, both CNN and HLN are posting substantial gains compared to Q2 2012, improving their position across the cable news landscape.
CNN’s success in Q2 2012 is occurring across all key dayparts, leading to advantages over competitors not seen in years:
- Total Day: +51% among total viewers and +71% among P25-54
- M-Su Prime: +53% among total viewers and +83% among P25-54
- Q2 2013 will mark the first time CNN has topped MSNBC in both Total Day and M-Su Prime among both total viewers and P25-54 since Q3 2009.
Several breaking news events in the quarter are contributing to CNN’s impressive growth, including:
- Boston Bombing and Manhunt: While viewing levels were elevated throughout the week, CNN’s coverage peaked on Friday April 19th with the culmination of the manhunt.
- April 19th ranked as the network’s best non-political day in 10 years among P2+, P25-54 and P18-34.
- CNN ranked as the top network in all of cable among P25-54 in Total Day and Prime.
- Oklahoma Tornados: The day the devastating tornado struck Moore, OK (May 20th), CNN ranked as the top cable news network in Total Day among P25-54 and P18-34.
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown debuted in Q2 2013 and was an immediate hit, dominating its Sunday 9p time period and registering impressive growth. Over the course of its first season, the program was:
- #1 in its time period across all cable news networks among the key P25-54 demographic (405k), more than doubling the delivery of its nearest competitor (FXNC).
- Up 153% among P25-54 versus time period performance four weeks prior to its launch.
In Q2 2013, CNN continued to remain #1 in reach in cable news, 22% ahead of FXNC and 38% ahead of MSNBC.

Boosted by coverage of the Jodi Arias trial, the continued success of newest program launch HLN After Dark and the telecast of the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards, HLN is posting double digit gains across both dayparts in total viewers and the P25-54 demo.
- Total Day: +58% among total viewers and +45% among P25-54
- M-Su Prime: +47% among total viewers and +47% among P25-54
- Q2 2013 will mark the first time HLN outdelivered MSNBC in Total Day among both P2+ and P25-54 dating back to Q2 2005.
HLN’s continuing coverage of the Jodi Arias murder trial in Q2 2013 garnered large audiences, culminating in performance that topped all ad-supported cable networks.
- As the verdict was handed down on May 8th (4-5p), HLN was the top-rated network in all ad-supported cable in P25-54 (646k).
- As Arias took the stand in defense of her life on May 21st (2-3p), it also ranked #1 in all ad-supported cable, delivering 2.2 million P2+ and 620k P25-54.
Adult Swim is on track to making Q2 2013 its most-watched second quarter in its history during Total Day among adults 18-34.
Adult Swim’s Total Day Delivery ranked #1 among adults 18-34 & 18-49 and men 18-34, & 18-49 on basic cable. Compared to Q2 2012, Total Day delivery grew among adults 18-34 by 7%, adults 18-49 by 4%, men 18-34 by 8% and men 18-49 by 3%.
In Primetime, Adult Swim also ranked #2 among basic cable networks for delivery of adults 18-34. Versus Q2 2012, Prime delivery grew by impressive double digits across the board: adults 18-34 by 22%, adults 18-49 by 17%, men 18-34 by 27% and men 18-49 by 18%.
Original series Loiter Squad (Sunday, 12 a.m.) ranked #1 in its timeslot among adults 18-34 on basic cable, with episode premieres of the series increasing delivery by double digits vs. the same time period last year. The newest original series Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell (Thursday, 12 a.m.) ranked #1 in its time period among all key adults and men 18-34.
Adult Swim’s TOONAMI block (Saturday, 12-6 a.m.) grew average delivery by double digits among key demos vs. the same time period last year, ranging between +28% and +34%. Anime series, including Bleach, Naruto, and Soul Eater, each ranked #1 in their respective time periods among men 18-24 & 18-34.
For the year-to-date, TBS continues to rank as basic cable’s #1 network in primetime among adults 18-34 and adults 18-49.
TBS’s hit sitcoms Men at Work and Sullivan & Son returned for their second seasons this quarter. Men at Work averaged 2 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery, including 1.2 million adults 18-49 and 659,000 adults 18-34.
Sullivan & Son launched its second season June 13th and has so far averaged 2 million viewers in Live + Same Day. Among key demos, Sullivan & Son has averaged 1 million adults 18-49 and 410,000 adults 18-34.
TBS’s new hidden-camera comedy series Who Gets the Last Laugh? has averaged 1.4 million viewers and ranks among the Top 10 new unscripted series on basic cable this quarter with adults 18-49 (803,000) and adults 18-34 (394,000).
The Big Bang Theory on TBS continues to reign as basic cable’s #1 off-net comedy, once again taking the title among total viewers and adults 18-49 for the sixth consecutive quarter.
Across Q2 2013, Cartoon Network ranked as television’s #1 network for Early Prime (7-9 p.m.) delivery among boys 6-11 & 9-14, and #1 for Total Day delivery among boys 9-14.
Cartoon Network stood out as the #1 television destination on Monday Night, Tuesday Night and Thursday Night (7-9p) among all targeted boys (2-11, 6-11 & 9-14).
- Original animated comedy series Regular Show was television’s #1 program on Mondays and Wednesdays among boys 6-11 & 9-14, and #1 among boys 9-14 on Thursdays.
- Premiere episodes of original series Adventure Time, Regular Show, and MAD each ranked #1 in their respective time periods among all kids and boys.
- Annoying Orange ranked as the #1 program on Thursdays among boys 6-11.
- Cartoon Network’s newest original series Teen Titans GO! (Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.) charted as the #1 program on Tuesdays among kids 2-11 & 6-11 and all targeted boys.
- The Looney Tunes Show (Tuesday, 8 p.m.) ranked #1 in its timeslot among kids 2-11 & 6-11 and all targeted boys vs. all TV, while earning mostly double-digit growth across the board vs. the same time period last year.
Saturday premieres of Beyblade: Metal Fury (8 a.m.) and Pokemon B&W: Rival Destinies (8:30 a.m.) ranked #1 in their respective time periods among boys 9-14.
truTV has scored successes with several of its original series in Q2 2013, led by breakout hits Lizard Lick Towing and Hardcore Pawn.
Lizard Lick Towing (Mondays at 10 p.m.) has garnered 2.8 million viewers this quarter, including 1.5 million adults 18-49 and 810,000 men 18-49. The show ranks as one of the Top 5 ad-supported cable programs in its time period in all three categories, as well as among adults and men 18-34. Lizard Lick Towing has also delivered triple-digit growth for its timeslot compared to year-ago, with total viewers up +113%, adults 18-49 up +117% and men 18-49 up +124%. In addition, the show has dropped its timeslot median age by four years to 39.
Hardcore Pawn (Tuesdays at 9pm) has averaged 2.5 million viewers in Q2 2013, including 1.2 million adults 18-49 and 631,000 men 18-49. The show has yielded strong growth over the same timeslot last year.
Also performing strongly for truTV this quarter are South Beach Tow (Wednesdays at 9:30pm), with 1.6 million viewers, and Operation Repo (Wednesdays at 9:30, 10 and 10:30pm) with 1.4 million viewers. Both shows have scored double-digit growth for their timeslots.
NBA on TNT
This year’s NBA Eastern Conference Finals averaged 8.4 million total viewers, an increase of +8% compared with the network’s coverage of the 2012 NBA Western Conference Finals. The corresponding 5.2 U.S. HH rating was up +4% over last year’s 5.0 average rating.
TNT’s coverage of this year’s Eastern Conference Finals led the network to win the night for each game telecast among broadcast and cable networks across all core male demos. The network also won the night across cable each night among U.S. HH rating, households and key adult and male demos.
Leading up to the NBA Finals, TNT aired the top five highest-rated and most-viewed 2013 NBA Playoff games and eight of the top 10 across broadcast and cable.
The NBA Playoffs on TNT averaged a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 on game nights, outdelivering all networks in the key demo throughout May Sweeps.
TNT’s exclusive presentation of the 2013 NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 7 between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers delivered a 7.1 U.S. HH rating and 11.5 million total viewers to become the third highest-rated and third most-viewed program in the history of the network.
The Eastern Conference Game 7 ranked as TNT’s highest-rated and most-viewed NBA telecast in the network’s 29-year history with the league and was the highest-rated and most-viewed NBA game across all of television – broadcast and cable – this year (prior to The Finals).
Following the Eastern Conference Finals Game 7, TNT’s Sports Emmy®-winning Inside the NBA averaged a 2.9 U.S. HH rating and 4.4 million total viewers to record its highest-rated and most-viewed show since 2011 (May 26 – 3.0 U.S. HH rating and 4.6 million total viewers).
The 2013 NBA Playoffs on TNT generated 28.5 million total comments by 15.7 million authors (up 20% and 29%, respectively, vs. last year) across all social media platforms.
NBA TV’s premiere of The Doctor on Monday, June 10 (9-10:30 p.m. ET) delivered 631,000 total viewers to rank as the second most-watched original program in the network’s history (excluding live game telecasts).
NBA TV’s live NBA Playoff telecast featuring the Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat on Tuesday, April 23, delivered the network’s third most-viewed NBA Playoff telecast of all time, with an average of 764,000 total viewers. The Bucks/Heat game also netted NBA TV’s highest viewership for an NBA Playoff telecast among adults 18-34, with an average of 270,000.
NBA TV’s critically acclaimed Open Court series averaged 149,000 total viewers for eight episodes this season, up +99% over six installments last season.
