Iconoclasts May Angelou

via press release:

New York, NY, May 30, 2014 – Following the death of poet and author, Maya Angelou, SundanceTV announced it will air Angelou’s “Iconoclasts” episode on Thursday, June 5th at 11:00 PM ET/PT to pay tribute to the acclaimed writer. The episode, which originally aired in 2005, featured provocative comedian Dave Chappelle.  In the episode, Chappelle and Angelou spend a day together at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where they discussed how poetry and comedy can bridge both genders and generations.

The “Iconoclasts” episode captures the imprint Maya Angelou left on American history and the message she conveyed throughout her life. During her conversation with Chappelle, Angelou discussed the Civil Rights Movement and her friendships with Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She also noted the common factor that defines an icon:  “And that’s the wonderful thing about the icon. You continue to grow and you develop courage – the most important of all the virtues. Because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.”

“We mourn the loss of a legendary and influential author who helped shape American culture not only through her writing but through her character.” said Sarah Barnett, President and General Manager, SundanceTV, “We are honored to be able to pay tribute to Ms. Angelou by sharing with our viewers the inspirational conversation she and Dave Chappelle created for SundanceTV.”

“Iconoclasts” is SundanceTV’s award-winning original series that explores the lives of two creative visionaries on each episode in an intimate setting. Each episode features an unpredictable exchange that reveals their life’s work and the alchemy of their different fields.
