Compared to Last Year, “ABC World News” Grows its Audience Among Both Total Viewers

and Adults 25-54 – Shows Most Growth Among Adults 25-54 Versus Competition


ABC Outperforms “CBS Evening News” by 1.56 Million Viewers and by 291,000 Adults 25-54


For the week of September 26, 2011, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 7.45 million Total Viewers and a 1.7 rating/6 share/2.00 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.  The ABC evening newscast built on premiere week by 3% in Total Viewers and by 2% in Adults 25-54.


For the 2nd straight week of the season, “World News” grew from the year-ago week in both Total Viewers (+5%) and Adults 25-54 (+8%).  Among the evening network newscasts,  “ABC World News” improved the most year-to-year among Adults 25-54 (NBC was up +4%; CBS was up +5%).

For the 3rd week in a row, “ABC World News” narrowed its week-to-week margins with “NBC Nightly News” in Total Viewers (-19% – 563,000 vs. 699,000), scoring its smallest gap with the NBC program in 6 weeks – since w/o 8/15/11.  Year-to-year, “World News” cut the gaps with “Nightly” by double-digits for the 2nd consecutive week in both Total Viewers (-14% – 563,000 vs. 658,000) and Adults 25-54 (-16% – 294,000 vs. 349,000).    


“ABC World News” outperformed CBS Evening News” by 1.56 million Total Viewers and by 291,000 Adults 25-54. 


Two weeks into the new season, “World News” is up in both Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+6%) compared to the first two weeks last season.  In fact, the ABC newscast is up the most year-to-year in the key adults news demo (NBC is flat; CBS is up by +2%).


“ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” airs at 6:30 p.m., (ET) on the ABC Television Network.  Michael Corn is the executive producer of the broadcast.
