Open Court is televised each Tuesday throughout October, leading up to the start of the 2013-14 NBA regular season.

Excerpts from tomorrow’s Open Court episode:

Barkley on the impact basketball has had on his life: “We get beat over the head every time a jock or a celebrity screws up. But, speaking for myself, if it wasn’t for basketball, ain’t no telling what I’d be doing. Basketball’s given me every single thing in my life. These guys, we all have a great life. It’s not to say we’re not intelligent or wouldn’t have been successful but our lives have been changed forever by a little round ball.”

Wilkins on the impact of playing basketball: “Basketball has given us an opportunity to grow outside our comfort zone. Most of us grew up in the projects, very poor…to have sports in your life, to give you an opportunity to build respect, to really understand how to give people an opportunity to be themselves…it taught me a lot about accepting someone else as you would want to be accepted.”

Barkley on the opportunity for international athletes to make it in the United States with the help of PEDs: “It’s easy for us, who grew up here in the United States and got all this economic opportunity going on. These guys, their only chance of making it out of that country making a living is through sports. And it isn’t up to me to sit here and say, ‘Hey, man, I know you’re living in the Dominican Republic, or Cuba, some of these other countries, and you got a chance to come to America and make hundreds of millions of dollars.’ I’m not saying it’s right, but I understand.”

Wilkins on character: “A good guy doesn’t do bad things over and over. He may do it one or two times but… sometimes you are who you are. You make comments in rage and we all do that, no question, but why do you make comments like that when you’re not enraged?”

McGrady on the influence of social media: “Because of the social media nowadays, camera phones…[you] try to have good character because you never know who’s watching; you never know who’s recording.”
