“Nightline” Beats CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” by Largest Margins of Season

in All Key Demos; Sixth Straight Week Beating CBS


“Nightline” Increases Total Viewer, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 Audience

Posts Strongest Performance in 4 Months



ABC News’ “Nightline” drew 1.684 million Total Viewers, 742,000 Adults 25-54 and 584,000 Adults 18-49 for the week of October 7, 2013, according to Nielsen Media Research.  “Nightline” outperformed CBS’ “The Late Late Show” by its largest margins of the season yet in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+295,000), Adults 25-54 (+124,000) and Adults 18-49 (+122,000).  “Nightline” has beaten the CBS program in all key target demos for the last 6 weeks.


“Nightline” claimed the No. 1 telecast in Total Viewers (1.856 million) and Adults 25-54 (907,000) on Wednesday (10/9/13), beating both CBS’s “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.663 million and 739,000, respectively) and NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (1.735 million and 819,000, respectively).


Growing over the previous week (1.591 million, 696,000 and 548,000, respectively, on w/o 9/30/13) for the 3rd week in a row in Total Viewers (+6%), Adults 25-54 (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+7%), “Nightline” turned in its strongest numbers in 4 months – since w/o 6/10/13, 6/17/10 and w/o 6/17/13, respectively.  


“Nightline” posted across-the-board year-to-year gains on ABC’s performance in the time period in Total Viewers (+15%), Adults 25-54 (+2%) and Adults 18-49 (+13%) – 1.467 million, 711,000, and 516,000, respectively, on w/o 10/8/13.  Further, “Nightline” has improved on ABC’s Total Viewer numbers in the time-slot for the last 7 weeks.  


On average in its new time period this season, “Nightline” is up over ABC’s performance compared to the same weeks last year in Total Viewers (+6%). In addition, “Nightline” leads CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” across the board: Total Viewers (+167,000), Adults 25-54 (+75,000) and Adults 18-49 (+68,000).


During the week of October 7th, “Nightline” took viewers inside the real hidden war between American mercenaries and Somali sailors of fortune; examined controversial police drug busts in Florida; introduced viewers to the creator of “Humans of New York,” the popular photo blog that makes you stop and feel and empathize; examined the controversial case of a 19-year-old college student arrested for a murder he says he knew nothing about after being accused by his own friend who now admits he lied; followed 30 extreme adventurers as they tear across the wilds of outer Mongolia, known as the toughest race in the world; took a closer look at the hottest male models in the world and the high-paying world of celebrity DJs; and featured “Feed Frenzy” – a nightly look at the buzziest stories of the day, among many other reports.


ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Dan Harris, and Dan Abrams.  Juju Chang is a correspondent. Jeanmarie Condon is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights from 12:35 a.m., ET to 1:00 a.m. on the ABC Television Network.  Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.
