Nielsen has posted a good look at the genre mix of top ten program viewing in broadcast primetime over the the last ten years. Reality and sports programming have gained a lot of ground since the 2001-02 season, and unsurprisingly it has come at the expense of dramas, and comedies (which were hardest hit). Overall, primetime viewing in general is up vs. the ’01-’02 season, but down from the peaks in ’03-’04 and ’06-’07. Given growth of DVR, On-Demand, online streaming etc. over the decade, Nielsen concludes that overall broadcast viewing is still impressive.
