“Wicked City” became the first out-and-out, get-it-off-the-schedule-now cancellation this season, with good reason. In the season of the Dead Show Walking, a frightfully bad 0.4 rating was still enough for ABC to yank it immediately.
The 10 p.m. Tuesday spot has been a sinkhole for a few years running, and “Wicked City” was, to put it charitably, not the show to buck that trend. But the show is also part of a larger problem in the last hour of primetime for ABC.
Three of the four shows currently rated as likely to be canceled or worse are 10 o’clock shows. It’s (barely) conceivable that “Castle” and “Nashville” could limp into next season, but they would do so with very little prospect of improvement. That means three of the five nights ABC has scripted programming at 10 are weak.
Thursday at 10 is fine with “How to Get Away With Murder” (for two thirds of the season, anyway). “Quantico” started out pretty well on Sundays, and it’s still in safe territory, but its recent slide is cause for some concern.
ABC is going to have some work to do at 10 next season.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode live+same-day adults 18-49 average rating by the live+same-day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. Why live+same-day ratings? Because they correlate very closely with the rarely disclosed C3 ratings (viewing of commercials within three days of air), which are the basis for most ad deals.
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays tend to be renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
