defiance episode 2

It’s been a rough week for Syfy original series.

The cable channel has canceled “Defiance” after three seasons. The decision comes just a few days after Syfy pulled the plug on “Dominion” as well.

Like “Dominion,” “Defiance” was a victim of ratings declines. The show’s same-day adults 18-49 average for Season 3 was 0.25, down more than 40 percent from the previous season’s 0.46. Still, at 1.1 million viewers, it had been the channel’s most-watched drama.

“‘Defiance’ was a truly groundbreaking series, delivering an immersive, cross-platform experience that transcended the television screen in a way that viewers had never seen before,” Syfy says in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work of the extraordinary cast, writers, artists and designers — and especially showrunner Kevin Murphy — who together brought the rich world of ‘Defiance’ to life over its three-season arc.”

Murphy, for his part, is looking at the positive side of the experience: “I got to collaborate with a group of stunning artists operating at the top of their game, and together we built a world.  Because of that, there is no room for anything other than joy in my heart.”

With “Haven,” “Continuum” and “Lost Girl” also leaving the schedule this year, Syfy has a nearly blank slate of scripted shows. ” It did pick up “12 Monkeys” for a second season and is continuing to import “Killjoys” from Canada. New shows “The Expanse,” “Magicians” and “Hunters” are on tap for the coming months along with miniseries “Childhood’s End.”
