After 34 weeks of calendar overlap Conan O’Brien’s (2009-10) Tonight Show adults 18-49 ratings were ahead of Jay Leno’s (2010-11) Tonight Show ratings on 22 of 34 weeks, Jay Leno’s were ahead on 4 weeks. On 8 weeks their ratings were tied.

NBC did not improve upon Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show ratings by putting Jay back into the Tonight Show, I’ll leave it up to the commenters to debate the other questions involved:

  • Would Conan have done as well as Jay during the same 2010-11 period?
  • Where would Jay’s ratings be had he not been removed from the Tonight Show for Conan in the first place?
  • Did the Conan/Jay imbroglio permanently damage the Tonight Show franchise?

Those looking to continue following the ups and downs of late night show ratings, our All New! Late Night Ratings scorecard is posted.

The chart shows the Tonight Show adults 18-49 weekly average ratings for 2009, 2010 and 2011.
