You can’t handle The Whole Truth! Son, we live in a world where broadcast networks have to make a living. And that living has to be made by selling advertising on their shows. Who’s gonna do it? You? You TWTFan?

ABC has a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for the fans and the cast and you curse ABC. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that there’s only 22 primetime hours in a week. And replacing ratings losers, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, makes money…You don’t want The Whole Truth.

Because deep down, in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want ABC canceling those losers. You want them making shows more people will watch. (Apologies to Colonel Jessup.)

As fun as that was, nobody’s talkin’ ’bout (or watching) My Generation either, and it’s certain to be cancelled, but I’ll write more about that next week. ABC please don’t cancel the show before I get to it.

Detroit 1-8-7 doesn’t look long for this world either, but that’s two weeks away from headlining a post, and I don’t think ABC has the bench strength to can more than 2 shows this early in the season, so I have time to get to it.

Better With You is the only ABC rookie show that seems to have a fighting chance for renewal at this point, and none of the veteran shows are in any danger.

It’s important to note that the Index (and prediction) for each show can change, particularly during the first several weeks of the season, both positively and negatively.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

How would the Renew / Cancel Index Have Done Predicting Last Season’s Scripted Show Fates? While the methods used have changed slightly from past seasons check out how the Renew / Cancel Index would have predicted renewals and cancellations from the 2009-10 broadcast television season.
