According to the contracts signed for last season, the American Idol winner Kris Allen was guaranteed a minimum of $650,000 and according to the New York Times’ sources, no recent winner has earned less than $1 million in the year or so after the contest.  There are strings attached though, an “Idol” contract can  bind contestants to the show’s producers for as long as seven years.

Finalists who reach the top 5 are likely to earn at least $100,000.  But the New York Times Ed Wyatt kicked off his story by noting that winning is no guarantee of stardom and that 2006 winner Taylor Hicks is currently playing the Teen Angel in a touring production of “Grease” in Milwaukee.
