According to The LA Times Fox will soon announce it has secured the rights to a U.S. version of Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” that would launch in the fall of 2011.

But it’s not really a story about that.  Mostly it’s yet another story speculating on whether this will be Simon’s last season on American Idol and how Cowell’s business aspirations threaten the reign of American Idol.

The thing with Cowell is that he really does have a lot of irons in the fire and probably simply can’t do everything he wants, which includes Idol, Britain’s Got Talent, both versions of X-Factor while also being the producer for America’s Got Talent (where contractually due to Idol, he cannot be a judge).

I’m not sure it’s possible based on rights deals, but it would be kind of cool (from the news cycle perspective)  if  NBC somehow managed to snare the right to “X Factor” and outbid Fox for Simon in general and have him leave Idol after this season for AGT.  At least momentarily it would distract folks from all the Leno news.

Whatever happens with “The X Factor” it will mean more unscripted content on the broadcast networks.

Where’s the outrage?
