CBS Renews Its Slate

Earlier this week, Les Moonves said he expected only “two new comedies and two new dramas” to join the Fall schedule. The most likely scheduling for that – Intelligence, The Mentalist, & The Crazy Ones canceled, with How I Met Your Mother ending, and everything else coming back – was obvious, and on Thursday CBS renewed everything but those shows.

The only thing approaching a surprise was The Good Wife. The show is past the 100 episode “bonus” for syndication, the cable syndication airings were pulled almost instantly, and its average is actually slightly below The Mentalist‘s, despite airing in a higher viewing hour (it was predictably hammered this week opposite the premieres of Cosmos and Resurrection). Unlike The Mentalist, though, The Good Wife is CBS owned, and when CBS couldn’t replace one drama hour this season, it seems impossible that they would attempt to replace three hours at once next season.

(There is chatter that Two and a Half Men may be getting a shorter, final (for now) season, suggesting that costs are indeed an issue.)

Resurrection Revives ABC?

Resurrection premiered extremely well, coming in as tied for the #3 freshman premiere of the season. (Then again, #2 on that list was the conspicuously not-renewed The Crazy Ones.) Shows dealing with spirituality have a decidedly mixed record recently on broadcast TV – initial numbers can either by heavenly (Touched by an Angel, Joan of Arcadia) or hellish (Save Me, The Book of Daniel), though few survive into syndication. (Clearly, it seems like a straight drama is the best approach when dealing with already tricky subject matter.)

Given that ABC’s season has produced just the 2-ish Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the mid 1s The Goldbergs, it seems unlikely that Resurrection will drop to the point where it will be in danger in the less than two months before the upfronts, so I’ve put it in the “Renewal Predicted” pile, but I will advise you to keep an eye on the ratings, given the difficulties with the genre.

Only Doubts About Believe

Believe premiered to the same rating The Blacklist did last week after The Voice. While that isn’t a bad rating, it is down almost 30% from The Blacklist’s premiere in the fall, the show won’t have The Voice as a lead-in after tonight, and Sundays are getting increasingly competitive. I’ve left it “On the Bubble” until I see the ratings for at least one airing under normal scheduling.

All Hope is Lost

This week Fox formally canceled Raising Hope. While that outcome hasn’t been in doubt since its first airing on Fridays this season, it was nice of Fox to at least spin that inevitability in a good light, rather than burying the news at the upfronts.

I would again point out that with Raising Hope ending, Back In The Game canceled, and Enlisted soon to join them, The Middle is left as one of the few “working class” shows on broadcast. Whether advertiser preferences, audience escapism, or some combination of other factors is at work, broadcast continues to stay away from lower-income settings.

Tom Shaw is a computer programmer from Milwaukee, WI. Bereft of Lost theories to argue about, he’s spent too much time attempting to figure out the TV industry.
