Masked Scheduler's Ratings Smackdown

The World Series starts today. I was involved in the postseason classic at both NBC and FOX. For a scheduler, the greatest nightmare was dealing with 4 p.m. divisional playoff and league championship series games that would potentially bleed into primetime. We often needed to call audibles up to a minute before 8 p.m. on the East Coast.
As my career at FOX was winding down and I had moved into an advisory role, there was a rain delay of an afternoon game and, against the suggestion of the scheduler at the time, the decision was made to start "The X Factor" throughout the country, then stop it if and when the game resumed. One problem: "X Factor" was scheduled to start at 8 p.m. on the West Coast. All havoc broke loose in trying to unscramble that egg.
When I started at FOX, the World Series would begin on a Saturday night. When I sat down with FOX Sports to discuss postseason baseball, they matter-of-factly moved the start of the series to a Tuesday night. I explained not only how that adversely impacted the primetime schedule, but how it would also hurt the ratings for the World Series.
I prevented them from making that move for two years before they decided to simply call off the meeting and send me a postseason schedule. The series ratings declined with the new schedule.
Good luck to FOX. Let's hope for a seven-game classic.
Tomorrow, "Walking Dead" ratings … what's up with that?

“The Voice” carried NBC to a ratings win Monday night, but it did so with its smallest adults 18-49 number of the fall so far.

The show delivered a 2.1 in the 18-49 demographic, a low point on Mondays in this cycle. “The Brave” was steady at 10 p.m. with a 1.0.

Three of CBS’ four comedies — “9JKL” (1.4), “Kevin Can Wait” (1.2) and “Me, Myself & I” (0.9) — are up a tenth of a point over last week’s early ratings. “The Big Bang Theory” (2.7) and “Scorpion”(0.8) are even with last week’s fast nationals (“Big Bang” adjusted up in the finals).

“The Good Doctor” continued its strong fall for ABC with a 1.9, pending updates for a “Monday Night Football” pre-emption. “Dancing With the Stars” is currently at 1.3.

“The Gifted” slipped a tenth to 1.0 on FOX, while “Lucifer” was steady with last week’s preliminary 0.8 (it adjusted up in the finals). “Supergirl” and “Valor” were also even with last week on The CW.

Definitions:
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience):
The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
