The NBA Finals carried ABC to another easy win in the Sunday primetime ratings this week.
Pending updates, another “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night” special posted a 1.9 rating in adults 18-49 with 6.8 million viewers. It was followed by the network’s usual pre-game “NBA Countdown” special, which scored a 2.3 with 7.25 million viewers.
Meanwhile, the network’s Game 2 broadcast raked in a 3.8 average rating with 10.79 million viewers. Similar to ABC’s Game 1 broadcast this year, that 3.8 and 10.79 million viewer audience was down considerably from the 5.2 early rating and 14.28 million viewers that the network’s Game 2 broadcast scored in 2018, which later adjusted up to a 6.5 final rating with 18.47 million viewers.
Since one of the two teams competing this year is Canadian, it’s likely that all of ABC’s NBA finals broadcasts will be down from their 2018 counterparts, as Nielsen does not measure ratings in Canada.
The season 2 premiere of the CW’s “Burden of Truth” grabbed a 0.1 rating, matching its season one finale last year, but did record its lowest audience to date with 488,000 viewers. A “Supernatural” (0.0) rerun capped off the night for the network.
Elsewhere, CBS, NBC, and FOX all took the night off, as the three networks aired only repeats throughout the night.
Network averages:
ABC | NBC | CBS | FOX | CW | |
Adults 18-49 rating/share | 3.3/16 | 0.5/3 | 0.3/1 | 0.3/2 | 0.1/0 |
Total Viewers (millions) | 9.85 | 2.92 | 3.78 | 1.23 | 0.37 |
Definitions:
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing: Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
