Broadcast primetime live + same-day ratings for Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018

Note: Live coverage of the State of the Union on ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC will result in greater adjustments than usual in the final ratings. Because the address aired commercial-free, it won’t be part of the networks’ final averages for the night.

The numbers for Tuesday:

Preliminary numbers for the State of the Union address show it down some from President Trump’s address to Congress in 2017.

Coverage on the Big 4 networks (including post-speech analysis) drew 19.8 million viewers, pending updates, vs. 23 million for the address last year (which was technically not a State of the Union, as incoming presidents get a year before their first formal SOTU). In metered-market households, the four-network average was a 14.8 rating, compared to 16.0 last year.

Trump’s 2017 address drew a combined audience of 47.74 million on cable and broadcast last year; final numbers for the State of the Union will be out later in the day.

A handful of original shows aired Tuesday as well. “The Flash” (0.9) and “Black Lightning” (0.8) were both up vs. last week for The CW, with “Black Lightning” matching its premiere. “Ellen’s Game of Games” (1.8) had the best 18-49 rating of the evening and was even with last week.

Two “Fresh Off the Boat” episodes on ABC scored 1.0, even with its last episode two weeks ago. “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials” came in at 1.1 on CBS.

: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience):
The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
