NBC and CBS were the ratings winners of the first Tuesday night of the 2019-20 season.

NBC led all three of the night’s primetime hours in the adults 18-49 demo, starting with “The Voice,” which topped the 8 p.m. hour with a 1.5 rating and 8.24 million viewers. Like most returning shows this season, “The Voice” is noticeably down from its Tuesday debut last fall, when it scored a 2.1 with 9.9 million viewers.

At 9 p.m., the season 4 premiere of “This is Us” won the night with a 1.8 rating and 7.67 million viewers, down from its season 3 premiere’s 3.0 rating a year ago. The season 2 premiere of “New Amsterdam” grabbed a 1.1 and 6.27 million viewers, also down from its 2018 premiere’s 1.8 rating.  “This is Us” and “New Amsterdam’s” ratings may adjust a bit in the finals later today, as the former ran 8 minutes into the 10 p.m. hour.

Elsewhere, the season premiere of CBS’ “NCIS” came third in the night’s 18-49 rankings with a 1.3 rating, but raked in the night’s largest audience (12.27 million viewers). The season 2 premiere of “FBI” followed it with a 0.9 and 8.76 million viewers at 9 p.m., while the “NCIS: New Orleans” season premiere rounded out the night for the network with a 0.7 and 6.74 million viewers. All three shows were down from their previous season premieres, but on par with their overall 2018-19 season averages.

On ABC, “The Conners” kicked off its second season with a 1.3 and 5.68 million viewers, predictably down from its series premiere’s 2.4 rating and 10.56 million viewer audience last year. The season 2 premiere of “Bless This Mess’ followed it with a 0.8 and 4 million viewers, down from its first season premiere’s 0.9, but up from its season 1 finale’s 0.6 and 2.84 million viewer audience.

Meanwhile, “Mixed-ish” got off to a pretty good start in the 9 p.m. hour, ticking up from its “Bless This Mess” lead-in’s 0.8 and 4 million viewers to a 0.9 with 4.01 million viewers. “Black-ish” failed to maintain its momentum at 9:30 p.m., grabbing just a 0.8 with 3.52 million viewers, steady with its performance last season. The series premiere of “Emergence” capped off ABC’s night with a 0.8 at 10 p.m., on par with “The Rookie’s” averages in the same time slot last fall. Similar to the “Mixed-ish” premiere too, “Emergence” did manage to rise from its “Black-ish” lead-in’s 3.52 million viewer audience to a 4.11 million viewer audience of its own.

Continuing the season’s trend of year-to-year declines, FOX’s “Empire” began its final season with a 1.0 and 3.35 million viewers, both of which marked new series lows for the drama. Its lead-in, “The Resident,” kicked off its third season with a 0.8 and 3.99 million viewers, down from both its second season’s premiere numbers (1.1, 4.88 million) and its overall averages (0.9, 5.02 million).

Definitions:

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience):
The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
