CBS started a heavy promotional push for its competition series “Hunted” over the weekend, airing spots for the show during its NFL games on Thanksgiving and on Sunday. It’s also going to give the show a lift from football for its premiere.

“Hunted,” in which two-person teams try to go off the grid while groups of investigators attempt to track them down, will debut Sunday, Jan. 22, following the AFC Championship game — typically one of the two or three most-watched telecasts of the year — on CBS. It then moves to its regular spot at 8 p.m. ET/PT Wednesdays starting Jan. 25, taking the “Survivor” spot until that show returns for its spring cycle, presumably in March.

“Hunted” is based on a British show of the same name. It will feature 18 contestants — nine two-person teams — who will attempt to disappear from public view for four weeks. They’ll be tracked by teams of experienced investigators (in the U.K. show, they were former police and intelligence officers) who will use both traditional (searching the homes of the “fugitives”) and high-tech (internet and cell-phone record searches) methods to locate them.

The fugitive teams were able to roam an area spanning 100,000 square miles of the southeastern United States during filming. Any team that manages to avoid capture for the 28-day period of the game wins a $250,000 prize.

CBS has yet to announce a full schedule for winter and spring. It has new dramas “Training Day” and “Doubt” and comedy “Superior Donuts” on tap for later in the season, along with Season 2 of “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” the 29th edition of “The Amazing Race” and a new season of “Undercover Boss.”
