The CW has announced the latest of its new shows set to appear in the network’s 2017-18 Fall TV lineup, and this time, it’s a reboot of classical proportions.
The network has officially put out a series order on a new reboot of “Dynasty.” Said to be a modern-day take on the classic 1980s melodrama, it hails from “Gossip Girl” duo, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The duo penned the pilot script for the series alongside showrunner Sallie Patrick (“Revenge”). All three will also serve as executive producers on the reboot, in addition to original “Dynasty” creators Esther Shapiro and Richard Shapiro. Lis Rowinski is set to serve as a co-EP, while Brad Silberling (“Jane the Virgin”) directed the pilot and, like everyone else, will also executive produce.
Despite the different time period, though, the reboot will have the same basic premise as the original series, following two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children.
The drama is said to be told primarily through the perspectives of two very powerful women at odds: Fallon Carrington — daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington (Grant Show) — and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal (Nathalie Kelley) — a Hispanic woman marrying into the family and America’s most powerful class. In an age where dynasties appear everywhere — from reality TV to the polling booths — this epic drama features the one percent in all its glitz and gloss, while exposing the dark underbelly: a corrupt world built on backroom deals, betrayal, and, in some cases, murder.
Along with Show and Kelley, the reboot also stars Elizabeth Gillies, Sam Adegoke, Robert Christopher Riley, Alan Dale, and Rafael de la Feuente. It is just one of several new pilots said to be receiving series orders from the CW this season.
