FOX has picked up “Empire,” the No. 1 scripted show on broadcast TV, for a third season in 2016-17.

The network made the completely unsurprising announcement Friday at the winter TV press tour. The show averages a 4.77 same-day rating in adults 18-49, eight tenths of a point ahead of the No. 2 show (“The Big Bang Theory,” 3.96). In Live +7, its rating rises to a 7.3.

“Empire’s” ratings have fallen off some from its otherworldly first season, but there was never really a question as to whether it would be renewed. There’s no word yet on scheduling for Season 3, but it will presumably return in the fall.

Season 2 of “Empire” returns March 30.

FOX also renewed “Scream Queens” on Friday. They join these shows that have been renewed for 2016 and beyond.
