FOX is bringing back “Lethal Weapon” in the 2018-19 TV season — only a little different than before.
The network has officially renewed the crime dramedy for a third season, it announced early Sunday afternoon. Following the recent firing of star Clayne Crawford, the series has cast “Goon” and “American Pie” star Seann William Scott as the new lead opposite Damon Wayans, with Crawford’s Martin Riggs expected to be written out of the show. Scott’s character will then be a new face, who gets folded into a partnership with Wayans’ Roger Murtaugh.
FOX opted not to renew Crawford’s contract after it was revealed that the star had been repeatedly causing problems on set with his behavior. While chances of the show getting renewed had been strong going into this week too, with the network scrambling to find another actor to replace Crawford, the official announcement was therefore delayed.
Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at the Fox Broadcasting Company, commented on Scott’s casting with the following:
“Seann is a fantastic addition to this already amazing cast. ‘Lethal Weapon’ is packed with action, drama and pure fun and we can’t wait to see Damon and Seann together on screen. Matt Miller, his incredible team and everyone at Warner Bros. have been tremendous partners, and we’re thrilled to bring this show back for another season.”
Throughout its second season — which aired its finale installment last week — “Lethal Weapon” averaged a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 with 4.11 million viewers, down from the 1.6 average of its first season. It improved to 1.7 and 6.8 million viewers with a week of delayed viewing.
