Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Sunday brought in the biggest TV audience since the Oscars, and outrated the awards in a key demographic.
The Cleveland Cavaliers’ 93-89 win over the Golden State Warriors drew an 11.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 30.8 million viewers. Both are the highest-ever numbers for an NBA game on ABC, which began broadcasting the finals in 2003.
The 11.2 demo rating is the best for any telecast since the Super Bowl on CBS in February. It topped the Oscar telecast by seven tenths of a point.
In total viewers, Game 7 was the biggest audience since the Academy Awards’ 34.43 million. It was also the biggest tune-in for any NBA game since June 1998, Michael Jordan’s final game with the Chicago Bulls.
