Stranger things have happened than this.

In an announcement that should surprise no one, Netflix has officially renewed its smash hit sci-fi series, “Stranger Things,” for a fourth season today. The renewal comes almost three full months after the show’s third season premiered on the streaming service back in July.

Along with the show’s renewal today, it has also been announced that “Stranger Things” creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have signed a new multi-year, nine-figure overall film and TV deal with Netflix.

“The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with ‘Stranger Things’ and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to see what the Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of the Upside Down.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to continue our relationship with Netflix. Back in early 2015, Ted Sarandos, Cindy Holland, Brian Wright and Matt Thunell took a huge chance on us and our show — and forever changed our lives,” the Duffer Brothers said in a joint statement today.

“From that first pitch meeting to the release of ‘Stranger Things 3,’ the entire Netflix team has been nothing short of sensational, providing us with the kind of support, guidance and creative freedom we always dreamed about. We can’t wait to tell many more stories together — beginning, of course, with a return trip to the Upside Down!”

Netflix, like all other streamers, doesn’t release the actual, overall viewership numbers for any of its original series, which makes knowing the specific size of “Stranger Things'” audience impossible. However, the series is believed by many to be not only Netflix’s most-watched original series, but one of the most popular TV shows on air right now.

Its third season broke viewership records for Netflix in July, as 40.7 million household accounts were said to have watched at least some of the season in just the four days of its release, with 18.2 million of those accounts also said to binged the entire season in the same amount of time.

The first three seasons of “Stranger Things” are available to stream now on Netflix.
