CBS has decided that later in the 2016-17 season will be a good time to make the “Donuts.”

The network on Wednesday gave a series order to “Superior Donuts,” a comedy based on the 2008 play of the same name by Tracy Letts. It stars Jermaine Fowler as a new employee of a donut shop in Chicago and Judd Hirsch as the shop’s set-in-his-ways owner. Katey Sagal, David Koechner, Maz Jobrani, Anna Baryshnikov, Darien Sills-Evans and Rell Battle also star.

The show filmed a pilot for consideration in the 2015-16 season. It wasn’t picked up, but CBS opted to make a new pilot with some different casting (including Hirsch and Sagal), and the series pickup followed.

Bob Daily (“The Odd Couple”), Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan (“Community,” “Scrubs”) are executive producers. It will premiere in early 2017.
