ABC has handed out another two-season pickup to one of its signature comedies: “The Goldbergs” will be on the air through 2018-19.

The two-season renewal will take the show through Season 6 on ABC. It comes a day after the network made a two-year commitment to “Modern Family.”

“The Goldbergs” took over the leadoff spot for ABC’s Wednesday comedy block this season and has performed solidly. It’s averaging a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49, very close to the 1.9 for “The Middle” in the same spot last season, and a little over 6 million viewers per week in initial airings. A week of delayed viewing pushes it up to 2.5 and 7.95 million.

The show based (very) loosely on creator Adam F. Goldberg’s youth in the 1980s stars Sean Giambrone as Adam, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin as his parents and Hayley Orrantia and Troy Gentile as his siblings. Patton Oswalt narrates the show as adult Adam.

The two-season pickup assures that ABC will have its two Wednesday comedy anchors in place almost to the end of the decade.

“The Goldbergs” joins these shows that have been renewed for 2017-18 and beyond.
